Making face masks to keep people safe
After making over 300 masks, Veronica Lewis is still going strong
Facemasks are now required in the UK for anybody travelling on public transport, including trains, buses and London’s Tube.
Veronica Lewis, a credit controller at JLL based in Norwich, is one of the volunteers stitching homemade masks for people in her local community to wear.
“I have a care home close to me and they put a call out for help a few months ago when coronavirus started to affect the UK. So, knowing I had superfluous material stashed away that I use for 1940’s sewing projects, I got to work.”
Veronica made 50 masks for the care home, and has since made over 300 masks. She’s part of a wider group – Mask Makers UK – with volunteers making masks, scrubs and bags needed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m still going,” she says. “I’ve been able to help a really wide range of people - the elderly, patients attending medical appointments, carers, the general public - and now I’m branching out into making masks for work colleagues. My machine is red hot!”
