A university that is leading the way, creates a campus to match

The Challenge

Heriot-Watt University Dubai needed a larger campus to accommodate their growing number of students. There was clear vision for this project - to create an environment that was futuristic, that would provide a myriad of learning experiences, and replicate future spaces in which students may work, after graduation. It was also a priority that the new campus was digitally enabled, and would meet the university’s sustainability goals.

The JLL Approach

JLL partnered with Heriot-Watt from the project’s initial stages, right through to completion. JLL brought an integrated team together - beginning with the strategic consulting team who worked on the “stay versus go” analysis which informed the agency team in finding and securing the location in Knowledge Park. Then came project management and cost management of the design and construction of the fit-out. As well as input into asset and facilities management and sustainability services, to advise and secure LEED certification. Having one partner across everything ensured a cohesive and integrated approach, maximizing project success and minimizing risks.

Bringing it to life

Inside the new campus is a futuristic educational environment, designed to inspire students and enrich their learning experience. Collaborative lecture theatres with booth-style seating to encourage small-group discussions. ‘Pod’ rooms that facilitate group-based learning with interconnected PCs and screens. A Design Hub for the fashion, architecture, and interior design disciplines. As well as the Watt Inc., a business incubator and the Bloomberg Trading Room for a simulated financial market experience. The building’s design draws on Heriot-Watt’s unique culture – nodding to both the campus in Scotland and Middle Eastern culture through materials, graphics and artwork. And, the campus not only meets the university’s sustainability goals, but has also achieved LEED Gold certification.
