US Navy Veteran finds success after service

Senior Chief Engineer Terry Moon says JLL opportunities are endless

For seven years, JLL’s Terry Moon was a U.S. Navy Submariner with roles including lead diesel mechanic, oxygen generator operator, hydraulic mechanic, pneumatics mechanic, plumber, quality assurance inspector and damage control specialist. He intended to eventually retire from service, but was honorably discharged.

As he adapted back into civilian life, he gained experience as a millwright, a parts puller at a wrecking yard, a prosthetic foot maker, a facilities HVAC technician, a utility technician and a stationary building engineer.

According to Terry, “starting at the bottom became the norm and while I didn’t realize it at the time, I was just searching for a career that fit.”

A chance encounter with an old roommate from his Navy days led to a referral for open engineer positions at a local high-rise building. “At long last, I found the career I was searching for that fit my training and experience,” said Terry.

After starting his career as a building engineer, Terry put his GI Bill benefits to use and earned an associate degree in Business Management, plus all required licensing. He also earned two master specialty electrician licenses to serve as the Electrical Administrator for JLL across all service lines in Washington.

Today, Terry is the Sr. Chief Engineer at 6100 4th Avenue South, a 238,148-square-foot property in Seattle. He credits his “experiences, both good and bad,” as key factors toward his success at JLL, along with the close-knit culture. “The unique thing about JLL is the culture of teamwork – the support from leadership as well as colleagues is the closest parallel from the Navy. Much like the military, a career with JLL can take you anywhere and be what you want it to be – for me, it’s been what I’ve made of it.”
